The Japanese traditional ancient theater character depicted in this mask is Kitsune.
She is made of hand painted ceramic on a wooden base. Kitsune is a very important
character in Japanese folklore. In Japanese mythology, she belongs to the category of
Yokai, of spirits: the Japanese word Kitsune can mean in fact "spirit of the fox".
The main characteristics of a kitsune are her marked intelligence, her long life,
during which she manages to take on supernatural characteristics more and more
powerful and above all the ability to transform and take on semblances different,
especially that of a beautiful young woman, the ability to keep promises made to
humans, or that the older she gets, the stronger and wiser she becomes. You can
tell the age of a kitsune by counting her tails, which can reach the number maximum of nine.
