Kokeshi Dolls

Kokeshi (こ け し) are traditional Japanese dolls. The oldest ones date back to the Edo era (1600-1868). Originally they were given to travelers who visited the spa places of northern Japan, in the Tohoku region, and in particular in the Miyagi province. Kokeshi dolls are made of seasoned wood, entirely decorated and hand painted by local artists. They are divided into two main categories: Traditional Kokeshi, dating back to the Edo era, are more essential and simple in shape: they have a round head, a cylindrical and elongated body and come exclusively from the Tohoku region. Creative Kokeshi are the most modern: they have the most rounded body and their kimonos have a wide variety of decorations. All Kokeshi are without arms and legs. Looking at these dolls, we are immediately struck by the variety of colors and richness of detail. The bust reproduces the traditional Japanese kimono, finely decorated with floral themes depicting the four seasons. Kokeshi are an excellent choice for an original gift, suitable for any occasion and occasion. They enrich our homes with their colors, they fascinate us with their delicacy and give us a smile with their nice smiley faces.
