Hakama

The Hakama is a traditional Japanese garment, reminiscent of a wide skirt / trousers. Hakama are used in various Japanese martial arts schools that are inspired by Bujutsu (set of ancient Samurai practices). There are two models of Hakama: the Andon Hakama, which is basically a wide pleated skirt and the Umanori Hakama, which are baggy pants, originally worn by Samurai during their long journeys. Already in the Edo period, women used the Hakama, in particular those who belonged to the Samurai caste. Even today the Hakama are also worn by women, especially on formal occasions. Shinto priestesses also wear red Hakama paired with a white Kimono.
