The character from the ancient Japanese Noh theater represented in this mask is Kitsune.
It is made of hand-painted ceramic. Kitsune is a very important character in Japanese folklore.
In Japanese mythology, it belongs to the category of Yokai, or spirits: the Japanese word kitsune
can in fact mean "fox spirit." The main characteristics of a Kitsune are its remarkable intelligence,
its long life, during which it can assume increasingly powerful supernatural characteristics, and
above all the ability to transform and take on different appearances, particularly that of a beautiful
young woman, the ability to keep promises made to humans, and the older it becomes, the stronger
and wiser it becomes. A Kitsune's age can be determined by counting its tails, which can reach a
maximum of nine.
